The Secret of Successful Evaluator
Dear Sunrise toastmasters:
All the tips on this handout are only to provide you with a choice, not an answer. These are Luci’s own personal opinions and suggestions, they are not the rules. Have fun in life! Find your own rules! ^_^
1. Your evaluation is a precious chance to uplift the speaker and light up his/her day.
.You can make a difference in another person’s life by helping them see their own beauty and greatness
.Giving an evaluation is about building human connection
2. If you want to be heard by the audience, connect with them. Forget about yourself on the stage.
.Take deep breath before you go on stage. Deep breath will help ease your nervousness and slow down your speaking speed.
.Do the best you can to prepare, but when you are on the stage, focus on the audience (NOW), not on your preparation(PAST).
.The power of NOW, living in the moment. Ex. Handshake example at district contest
3. Pay attention to the speaker, not only to what he/she says but also to the person. How can we help the speaker to give a even more powerful speech than the one he/she did.
.Topic: does the content fit his/her topic
.Content: intro, body, conclusion
.Delivery: eye contact, gestures, etc
.Unique personal speaking style (we are most powerful/attractive when we are authentic)
4. Be truthful and authentic with your comment, that’s what will help the speaker grow. You can still be nice when you give “negative” feedback.
.“I love your speech.” “I look forward to your next speech.” “You did a wonderful job.” “ I think your speech is perfect.” Etc
.Tell them “why”
.You can be nice and still give “negative” feedback as long as your motivation is to help them grow
Ex. Susan example
5. What’s the highest vision you hold of yourself as an evaluator?
.Luci’s example
.Bringing consciousness/awareness into your life (evaluation/speech/work, etc). Awareness is what adds quality to your evaluation and life
